About the Role:
The Youth Peer Practitioner will utilise their personal experience of mental illness to provide culturally safe support to young people at risk of, or experiencing mental health conditions connected with the headspace Adelaide and their families/carers.
This dedicated role will aid in the development and expansion of youth groups, professional development, increase safety and inclusion and access of services for young people to address their mental health issues in a safe inclusive space.
The overall aims of the Peer Support Program is to draw upon young people’s lived experience of mental health difficulties in order to:
Provide and hold hope, inspiration and empowerment for recovery
Destigmatise mental health difficulties
Provide opportunities for young people and staff to benefit from collective wisdom
Drawing from a strengths-based recovery orientated service of care, the incumbent will act as a role model and advocate towards recovery for people at risk of, or experiencing mental health conditions. Working collaboratively with headspace staff, they will work to develop and implement activities that will improve the capacity of headspace Adelaide to deliver appropriate, sensitive and safe primary mental health care services for young people at risk of, or experiencing, mental health conditions.
headspace Adelaide will support the Youth Peer Practitioner to undertake accredited training (Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, Certificate IV in Mental Health or an equivalent course of study), including meeting course fee costs. The worker will also be supported to participate in workshops, mentoring and supervision sessions.
Experience Requirements:
Demonstrated experience working within a fast-paced environment;
Personal experience of being a consumer accessing mental health services
Knowledge and experience in using the Microsoft suite of software and databases
Qualification and Other Requirements:
Current or willing to obtain a Working with Children's Check (WWCC)
Current or willing to obtain a National Police Check (NPC)
Certificate IV in Mental Health / Peer Work or equivalent
